Does your pot need a drainage hole? If you’re a plant parent, you will run into this dilemma eventually. I get a lot of my pots from Hobby Lobby, Michael’s and TJ Maxx. Really pretty, unique pots at great prices, but they don’t have drainage holes. Whether it’s a decorative pot without a hole, a used candle holder, a coffee mug or something else, here’s how to drill a hole into a ceramic pot and turn anything into a planter!
What You’ll Need
- Ceramic pots to drill holes in
- Power drill
- Spray bottle with water
- Diamond drill bit
How To Drill A Hole In A Ceramic Pot
Step 1
Start with the ceramic pot turned upside down. Prep your pot by spraying water on it. This will keep your drill bit from overheating.
Step 2
Attach the diamond drill bit to your drill. Start drilling at an angle and make an indent in the pot. As you drill, slowly straighten out the drill bit until it’s fully on top of the pot, drilling a circular hole.
Step 3
Continue drilling for about 5 minutes. Don’t put extra pressure on your drill- this can cause the pot to break. Depending on how thick your pot is, the time this takes will vary. Patience is key! Take a break every minute or so and spray more water on the pot to prevent overheating.
Step 4
You’re done! Now, your pot should have a hole, and it’s time to add your plant.
